4 Tips for Focusing on Business, Even in the Busy Month of May

Has May become the new December with the volume of celebrations, year-end activities, graduations, and transitions to summer? For me, in addition to working with my fabulous clients and a business I love, I have two graduations from two different high schools for my twins, an older daughter moving to DC for a summer internship, my own Leadership Cobb graduation, and a downsize and move to a new home – all in the month of May! I am very grateful and blessed. I have practiced the following tips to keep from feeling too stressed.

1. Give Yourself a Break – Literally take regular breaks for stress-reducers like exercise, meditation, or even a funny movie, once in a while. Give yourself a peace-of-mind break too, by allowing yourself to make progress without the internal conversation of “it’s not enough.” Most, if not all stressed-out feelings, are a reaction to what’s going on around us. The good news is with presence of mind, we can choose whether we take someone’s head off or whether we take a walk around the block and re engage with a different perspective.

2. Make a Plan – Allow yourself (or force yourself) to take some quiet time to plan. Even 15 minutes a day to plan the next day’s priorities & must-do’s shifts you into a strategic mindset versus reactive chaos. Instead of just checking busy-work off your list, schedule the most important 3-5 priorities with time blocked on your calendar to accomplish.

3. Ask for Help – This is a big one for most of us. The myth that we have to go-it-alone does not serve anyone. Once you have created your plan, look for ways to delegate or ask for specific help. It’s much easier to help  someone who breaks it down into specific tasks. For example, (with the help of friends) I have been sorting through closets and creating sections for what I am taking to my new home, items for each family member, and items for specific designated charities. When other friends offer to help, they can spend an hour or two packing up the already sorted items. Which specific tasks can you delegate to your team or contract out to another business owner?

4. Reward Your Progress – It’s important to acknowledge accomplishments. What we focus on expands, so when we notice what is good, we get more of that. Focus on the number of satisfied customers or the completion of your 1-2 top priorities even if the 3 rd one will wait until tomorrow. I encourage my clients to schedule a massage or a date-night celebration as a motivator to keep going. I am thinking about a beach trip later this summer to celebrate all the goodness of May.

These tips are simple, yet not always easy to incorporate into regular habits. I encourage you to adopt one or all, and I would love to hear from you with your tips to keep it flowing with joy and ease.
